Customize a Website
We need a website login so customers can see where their project is in our plant, but we don't want to directly connect our internal system with the Internet. How can let customers log in and get a status update, without inviting in hackers?
With some custom programming, it should be possible to create a login system on your website, and have your internal system publish a small database file several times a day directly to your website.
Using this approach will allow you to keep customer information private. Requiring a login by the customer, and only exporting a small data file with the customer's project number and current status will insure the privacy of your customers and keep your internal system secure.
Tips:
- Put some basic documentation together to explain what you need to accomplish.
- Determine if your login system will need to require users to register and receive an email with their password (for authentication) or if you will be importing your users into the new system using an existing user database.
- If you already have a user list, email addresses can usually be used as the User Nameāmake sure your database is complete.
- Determine the best place for the customer login link so it will be easy to find.
- Test the system before going live.
