Set Up Content Management (CMS)

We have about forty pages in our website, and we need to add another thirty or more pages to flesh out our customer service area.

How do we go from a static website to a website with a Content Management System without spending a fortune?

It is usually not practical to try and add code to an existing website in order to give it CMS capabilities.

A new website with a Content Management System built into the website architecture can be built separate from your current website, and is the better approach.

Once all the content has been moved over and the website has been tested, the domain name can be pointed from the old website to the new website.

CMS Advantages

With a Content Management System, you will have several advantages over your old website, such as keyword searching on all pages, and the ability to change the look of the website by changing the website design template.

Depending on your website needs, redesigning your website with a CMS may be very inexpensive. Given the additional capabilities you will have such as updatating your website whenever you like and the ability to add pages yourself, a Content Management System can actually pay for itself.

Tips:

  • Make sure you understand the strengths and weaknesses of different proposed CMS solutions. A CMS solution should suit your website needs.
  • Design one person on your staff to help with content migration, making changes and updates to the system once the CMS is in place.
  • Be sure to understand the switchover process from the existing website to the new CMS and how this will affect your website or the ability of your website visitors to have access to the website.
  • Consider using 301 Redirects so that old website pages which may be ranked in search engines will continue to function once the new website is launched.
  • Be wary of solutions that require a monthly fee beyond hosting.
  • Have a backup routine for the entire website and an offsite copy of the website.
